>>History
GitLab was created in 2011 by Ukrainian programmer Dmitriy Zaporozhets as a side project written in `F33f`_`[Ruby on Rails`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Ruby_on_Rails]`_`f. Sytse Sijbrandij wanted to sell it as a service, which Zaporozhets agreed to. So the GitLab B.V. was founded in Utrecht in the Netherlands. Later Zaporozhets quit his job and started as CTO at GitLab.`:cite-ref-4[`F5bf`_`[4`#cite-note-4]`_`f]
